I'm not in the habit of recording much of what I do, and definitely not trying to promote my yt channel, hence why most videos I'm ever likely to share will be unlisted or private. Just about everything we do is under NDA with someone or other, so have to be careful with that too.

All the same I thought I'd upload some things that I have on my phone and share, maybe a bit of context to the kind of work I do if nothing else.

Just about every time I record something it's either to prove something to the customer, or for showing my dad, who taught me the trade and likes to see what I'm working on sometimes. Not really intended to be seen by anyone else, so don't crucify me if they're shitty or pointless 😁

I'll start with this one, which is some fairly standard mill-turn work, but it tickles me because I've cut the time per part by nearly two hours compared to how we used to do them before we got the NTX. It's a non-round pin with a sort of teardrop shaped cross section and some end work. Material is forged 34CrNiMo8, quenched and tempered. I added timestamps to this video because it's 45min long and has some long uninteresting sections and some coolant whiteout. Pretty much impossible to run this material without coolant unfortunately.

This one is an older video and I can't remember all the details about it, but it's a lot of chips being made! I think it was 18" thick plate, S355 steel. It was getting machined into a wedge shape, huge amount of material removal with a 66mm Tungaloy DoFeed.

We have two 5Te (metric tonnes) overhead cranes in the shop, needed both of them to lift it into the machine and turn it for the first few setups, but took it out finished with one.

Here's the same machine and tool going a bit faster on a big chuck of 7075. Love the rooster tails:

Another old one, a nice part I made, but the video is because it was the first real part measured on our CMM after I retrofitted it with complete new electronics and software, which I was quite proud of having done successfully!

I recorded this on a phone, can't remember which, but for some reason the mic was heavily biasing the noise from the self levelling feet that the machine sits on. It's not that noisy in person.

Pure eye candy. There’s just something about manual machining that gives a high sense of accomplishment.
I agree. Our manuals don't get turned on very often tbh, but whenever I have something like this to do it's always a welcome change.

Thanks!

I thought I had more tbh, but they're mostly like 10s clips of various things here and there. I take photos way more than videos.

I'm guessing your about 5th generation into this metal work caper, May your old man live long and prosper.. I'd bet a bottle of scotch, you have blacksmiths, iron workers in generations past,
As always, Regards Phil.

Cool, I hate to say this, but that is the first time I have ever seen a mill/turn with a tool changer. I have been a self employed small shop owner for over 25 years and up till a couple months ago suffered through a 10 year stretch of having data capped satellite internet where you could not watch videos. Now at least I have cell phone hot spot wireless with unlimited data with at least enough speed to watch videos at 720 resolution or lower. What is that machine model and what do they go for new?

As it happens, Dad was the first as far as I know. Dad's dad was a farmer, mum's dad was a builder. I set out on a different path again, but wound up at dad's paying off my student loans, and discovered that I didn't mind it...

I think there may have been a blacksmith here and there in the family tree, but you'd have to go back a bit.

It's a DMG Mori NTX2500, base configuration is about £350k here in the UK, but you can option it until you run out of money. We paid about £415K ($576K at current ex/r) for this config, and I have to say it's hurting now. We placed the order about 3 months before covid hit, and it was installed towards the tail end of the first lockdown, after all the medical manufacturers had been taken care of. Very little of the work we bought it for has come to fruition during the lockdowns, and the repayments are a burden. Things are picking up now though and it looked like there was light at the end of the tunnel, but we were dealt a totally unrelated and potentially fatal blow on Friday that I may or may not go into in another thread....

Oh well 🤷‍♂️
