I've never done any grinding, except for a little bit of work with a Jones and Shipman 310 tool and cutter grinder.

I inherited a nice Jones and Shipman 540X surface grinder when I took this place over, and I'd like to learn how to use it. The only books I can find on the subject are £200 academic tomes that presumably go way deeper on the subject than I need to right now.

Any recommendations?

I've added a good bit of stuff in a sticky thread in the grinding section (Abrasive Machining) at PM. Have you nabbed that?

VERY comprehensive!

One thing - maybe obvious (?) - regarding safety.
If you use coolant, when you turn off the wheel, don't keep the coolant running onto it. It may load (soak into) the wheel and when you turn the wheel back on, the wheel is VERY out of balance....
