Nice!! Devices with similar function are used in machine tool factories for gently setting and lifting components during fitting/assembly.

Yes, I think it was Dieco that made it.
However you could only use it to lower down.
Mine allows you to jack it back up.

I have one of those soft lower only units. Made by "Permadur". Need to get my crane fully operational so I can use it.

I have one of those, but enerpac.
Yes, the problem is where to keep the pump.
I guess you could tye wrap it alongside the cylinder, and use steel tubing to the cylinder.

I have some hydraulic pistons that have an acme screw and a handwheel instead of a rod. They were part of a dyno cell for testing winches where they were used to control the brake calipers on large spinning discs.

Something like that would work OK, especially for lighter loads.

Something like that would work OK, especially for lighter loads.
Torqueing them whilst hanging from a swivel hook looks like a problem.
