Got my cart ahead of my horse and accidentally bought a 1990 QT15. It's under power and in use right down the road so I'm going to go check it out.

It comes with a full set of manuals and all the tooling blocks. A2-6 spindle with a collet nose on it now. Rigging looks pretty straight forward, 3 point lift. Mazatrol T32-2 control.

What should I look for? Dirty stuff that should be clean? Clean stuff that should be dirty?

Thanks in advance!

Now you might accidentally buy a 3 jaw chuck too. Pretty cool it has a chip conveyor. You probably already know Philibuster from out in AZ has a YouTube channel about these older Mazak controls. Nice!

A2-6 is super common, likely the most common size for sale used. I would say you should be able to find a good 8" chuck for $500 on maybe a little less if you look hard enough. When you are ready if you can't find anything let me know and I can ask a couple of friends that I know have tons and tons of chucks sitting behind the machines that never get used.

It's my lucky day, it also has an 8" kitagawa, just not pictured. Now if I get all the 16j collets I'll be in tall cotton.

Nice little machine. We got a shop full of Mazaks. From a 1987 T-1 to a 2016 Bartac/Integrex with the Smooth control . If you need help with your programming, let me know. I assume you will be running Mazatrol (?).

I got it a rift with a few PM members when I suggested looking to E-bay for used power chucks as they often go for 10-20 cents on the dollar of new. I got crapped on as an idiot bacause in a few guys mind all the used power chucks on E-bay are junk as why would anyone have a reason to sell a good used one. I reminded them I personally sold two 6" Kitagawas for $350 a piece in good shape that came from a couple machines I scrapped, at the time new they would have been $3k a piece.

We have two brand new, never been used 10 inch Kitigawas that have been sitting on the shelf for almost two years. They were replaced with two ATS quick change chucks. We will probably sell them on Ebay, they are not doing us any good. There are some real deals on Ebay, you just have to be careful.

Absolutely. I've been watching Philabuster's vids and it looks as easy and everyone makes it out to be. Also, his test part is a dead ringer for what I'm going to use this machine for.

Other than snapping pics of all the parameters, which I'll definitely do, what else should I do prior to transport? What needs to be blocked/restrained? I'm sure the riggers will fork it onto my trailer, but I'm more setup for OH lift. Got all the rigging, no biggie there.

It is pita if your batteries die and you have to reinitialize. You might look at changing those.

I have moved lots of CNC lathes that size on regular old rollback tow trucks for around $120.

I've even been lazy and left the conveyor in place and it rode fine.

I love that style of tailstock. Real easy to adjust taper out of it.

No, it's for if you want to check or change an insert in the middle of a program type thing.

I think you press feed hold, then then button and back the tool off a little and press the button again and then back the tool up to where you can access it. Then when you hit cycle start it rapids to the second saved point and feeds to the first.

I might have the procedure a little screwed up but thats the general idea.

Oh and to answer the question asked in the title of the thread.

Make round stuff
