Have to rough out a groove for a dovetail o-ring. Material is 6061. Endmill is 2 flute. 65K RPM

Looked on Harvey website and they are calling for 0.0005 per tooth at 1 times D. That's 65 IPM. I have to go 0.048" deep. That seems awful fast for a full slot.

I was thinking helix down 0.010" or 0.020" per pass.

The faster the better but I would like it to be reliable. I have 20 endmills and about 2000" of slot to do.

I will likely keep pushing till it snaps but I'm curious what others have to say.

I am not sure how Harvey is, some years back I was in a similar position with a Destiny tool, broke 2 of them and they replaced them, gave me some new numbers that still seemed too fast, that was 2007 and I am still running them and have only changed that tiny bastard twice. I would try their numbers and if they don't work, give them a ring.

I want all the details when it's over.
I just want it to be over. Got work backing up. Customers that don't understand what not accepting orders means 🙄 I know one of my large mail order customers is out of products and will be placing a large order soon. Simply couldn't be bothered with small shit.

What's the diameter of the O-Ring groove you have to cut? With the 64K Spindle a Helix at a high feed rate would be my choice if it's a decent size diameter. If it's smaller you're better off plunging to depth (assuming they're center cutting) and doing it in one shot at a slower feed but you'd probably end up with a nice burr up top. Most importantly, runout is going to be a huge determining factor for tool life with that small of a tool.

Questions like this make me miss problem solving with metal cutting tool's. I may be out of touch after machining composite's, ceramics and glass the past 5 years...

I am ramping down. The grooves are about 52" long each and not round.

5 passes at .01 DOC? What is the machines max spindle speed without the speeder??? Even if you went at 8k for 2 passes it would be faster.
12K machine spindle, which at the same chip load comes out to 12 IPM. Even if you took it in one pass at 12 IPM that would be slower than 5 passes at 65 IPM.

1 pass 52" @ 12 IPM = 4.3 min
2 passes 104" @ 12 IPM = 8.8 min
5 passes 260" @ 65 IPM = 4 min

Maybe if the diameter of the groove isn’t too big, trepan it.
It's not round.

This is to rough out the bulk of the material before I go in with a dovetail cutter. Takes 1/16" oring material.

These are the same parts I had to drill 20" deep 0.234" holes in.

Shockingly enough I have done over 1000" and have not broke a single tool. The finish is better than it looks in the pic, but it doesn't matter anyway cause I need to go back in with a dovetail cutter.

Hope your speeder holds up for the 10,000 inches of cutting!
Hope your access to this site holds up after 10,000 miles of talking shit to people.

If you've got a contribution, by all means let's hear it. But contributions have a specific definition, just adding dissent doesn't fall within that definition.

Sincerely, Robert

I got nothing to add to the slotting stuff, but can I ask what it is?

Robert,
Not adding dissent but if that’s how you perceived it. I wished Herding cats Good luck with his speeder head. Nothing bad. He mentioned there may be an issue with his speeder bearings. If you read the whole thread I did make what I thought were positive contributions to this thread.
If you perceive I only talk shit or am demeaning to people or I have nothing to offer, take it to the admins.
I came to this forum because that kind of behavior was not here.
I’ll admit I might throw a pun out there and I might have a different angle on a subject but isn’t that why we come here? I have not ever taken a direct shot at anyone here.
Sorry I offended you.

Nick
