I can’t rotate the head 90 without removing the bracket that holds my DRO, my clamp kit, and collet/chuck rack. Plus the part would have to be higher up off the table than my current vise height. In any event, the head will get checked after I move everything back and tweaked if needed.Didn't want to rotate the head? I suppose it is a bit of a PITA to re-tram it
Unless it’s 60 or warmer, that thing stays in the garage. Would not want to get a chill .….
Though, after seeing the size of that part and the fact it was pretty damn nice weather today I am a little offended he didn't take a short jaunt on the Ducati down to visit me so I could help him do that machinework with my HBM.
I have a friend did that same thing with some parts 8' long, the machine was 5' in the air on a forklift and he was standing on a step ladder, wish I had pics
First shop I worked at had a big radial drill. Right in front of the table there as a pit about 2 foot square by about 10 foot deep. We drilled and tapped bolt patterns in the ends of the legs for Hyster straddle carriers by hanging them down the pit and clamping to a fixture mounted on the table.I have a friend did that same thing with some parts 8' long, the machine was 5' in the air on a forklift and he was standing on a step ladder, wish I had pics
I have a couple Kurt knockoff V3600 vices for this exact purpose. They are square on 4 sides…Didn't want to rotate the head? I suppose it is a bit of a PITA to re-tram it
A mate who was also a Customer, had a 3ft dia hole dug 3ft deep so he could do a specific couple of jobs by hanging them off the table "downwards". All nicely done on a floor you could eat your dinner off with a removable manhole coverI have a friend did that same thing with some parts 8' long, the machine was 5' in the air on a forklift and he was standing on a step ladder, wish I had pics
Yes it can sometimes. I have a small vise that can bolt to the T-slot on the compound slide of my lathe. For this part it wouldn’t work as it doesn’t open enough for the bar to sit flat and standing up it was too tall.A manual lathe works well for this type of work, especially for holes over 5" deep.
Never really found that to be a problem for me.....yea, you don't have quite the feel of a quill using a handwheel to "drill'Not having a quill makes horizontal holes suck
