Picked up this boring bar for a job and found the standard WNMG 432 series inserts do not fit. They are 1/2" inscribed circle and 3/16" tall, the inserts that do go with this bar are 5/16" thick... (WNGX)

After a search through Kennametals site, it seems that all the compatible inserts available to fit are ceramics that are generally suitable for cast iron.

Is there a way to convert this to accept standard wnmg inserts? Possibly a thicker shim? Maybe Stack a couple shims?

I;ve used the Iscar WNMX and CNMX tools, I believe the seat is specific to match the underside of the insert, don't know if it will fit that bar. If it does work, those inserts are awesome if a bit overkill for boring on a bar that small.
I think stacking shims or making one would be worth trying.

Just a word about ---X inserts - The X at the end means that the insert is non-ISO, meaning likely, proprietary.

So, just be cautious when assuming that all ---X inserts are the same.

You could stack shims if you really needed to. The make 424-thickness shims to accommodate WNMG 44x thickness inserts.

However, this bar is probably going to be a PITA long term. My long-term advice would be to throw it in the chip-hopper, and go buy a bar that accepts CCMT 432, or 332 inserts for boring proper.

To speak to that - The Iscar X inserts are intended for heavy chips and heavy feeds, the Kenna tools might be the same, which might be tough to achieve with a bar that looks like about 1.5" or 1.25". They work great in my 30hp lathe where regular CNMG inserts break, but they are not good for breaking chips on light feeds.
A WNMG insert with a TF chipbreaker does work well under varying conditions if you can hold it in that bar.
What does the underside of that clamp finger look like, is it flat or is it shaped to fit a proprietary insert?

On Tour....
I aquired a few holders along the way and absolutely hated throwing them.
But it is the sensible thing to do - or at least trade them in when a company is doing a special sales swapover or when you buy 5 boxes of inserts and get free holders etc.
Just ensure they're ISO inserts though LoL

The clamp is made to fit the star shaped depression in the insert. But it would probably clamp down on other inserts just fine. The job I intended to use it for was finish boring 10” deep in 1020 DOM. Relatively light cut, but its hanging out there pretty far. From what I understand about ceramics (I’ve never personally run them) they are not going to be very suitable for this.
