Don’t hold your breath on grinding, they keep one step ahead of hard turning/milling move the decimal point better abrasives, better tool management….
Remember (well you probably don’t) when Hexapods were all of the rage, if you didn’t have one of these in the next 3 years you would be out of business!!! lol!
Well Gene Haas and every other manufacturer has sold plenty of c-frame VMC’s since then.
I have always heard Blanchards are disgusting power hungry behemoths incapable of holding .005" tolerance on parts. No kidding. Call the two Portland grinding shops with Blanchards and ask them to hold a thou. They act like you kicked their dog or something.

So i was trying to do Blanchardy stuff without a Blanchard for awhile. Stupid me finally gave in and bought a cheap, nice Blanchard. Turns out-

Blanchards are not very big. My 18-30 is the same footprint as my 12x24 surface grinder. They do use power I'm sure, but mine starts up no problem on my RPC 3 phase. They're a little gross I spose, but no worse than any CNC really. There's a lot less mist than I expected. And hands down, a Blanchard beats any CNC mill for stock prep or cosmetic finishing.

So basically all the advice I have gotten about Blanchards was from guys who had never run one.

I would say it would be a pretty shitty job to just stand in front of a Blanchard and load/unload parts all day everyday, but that's true for a lot of machines.

My favorite local Blanchard shop offers flattening and straightening. I think they can grind 100” diameter. And the place is spotless. Typically they can do 2” thick 18” square parts I think you could get +/-.0005 and flat w/in .001.
As some younger guys think things are going to “ tech out” people just find a new or different application for them…

I have seen adverts in old magazines for Blanchards, and the small ones being used in some odd applications, to some very tight
tolerances flatness and thickness.
Ceramics, Jo blocks, etc.

Like grinding quartz crystals at Bliley electric here in Erie.

The fellow who bought the Newbould has a Swiss shop in Illinois. He wanted this because it's cool, same reason I bought it pretty much. He heard a podcast somewhere about RJ and decided he was going to buy one if he ever saw one come up. Small world dept - he grew up 1/2 hr away from me.
