Could you have pivoted into a new, related product?

"Billet" serpentine or timing pulleys? Saginaw PS pump mounting kits for (insert any engine here)? Power steering adapter fittings for Saginaw steering pumps. Steering box rebuild parts like oversize sector shafts and/or bearings/sleeves to fix all the 90's era crap steering boxes (especially Dodge)? York OBA compressor mounts for any engine, especially ones used in offroad and lowrider type vehicles. Dual alternator kits for offroad vehicles that winch often? Dual alternator delete kits for ex-ambulance F-series Ford trucks that guys don't want the extra alternator anymore?Even just simple V belt pulley setups made for the old SBC and BBC motors that are better than the sloppy chinese junk on the market today.

I could keep going...

Every gearhead I know with an old V8 buys those cheap aluminum pulleys on Ebay and then brings them to me to true up and fix the offsets.
All great ideas. The problem was me, my previously bolted together lower spine pretty much stopped my ability to wrench on cars and work long hours in the shop, so I would have needed to retain two employees, that could be a $2500 a week bleed. I did give it two more months trying to invent new products, probably could have made it work, but I was getting too close to the bottom of the cash well and did not want to incur debt on a gamble, and have a year's living expenses. The options I used to make up for mistakes in the past, work long hours and take on side work as an electrician were no longer options.

As for those pulleys that wobble and have bad offsets, they probably were not designed using the clamp on lasers that we used or machined by someone who knew what they were doing. I looked at those engine dress and conversion kits at the time, they seemed to be going too cheap. I think a lot of them used to have crank pulleys machined from cheap Chinese castings. A lot of car guys seem to want whatever is cheapest, I could not make quality out of domestic materials and compete with their prices. I did some custom dualkit work for some pretty high end clientele, they constantly complained about prices and tried to beat me down. This was work farmed out from the shop the famous person's people dropped the car or boat off at. The custom shop wanted fat profits and the people were probably skimming and wanted to leave me with crumbs. The most amusing cars I worked on were a couple Shaq had, I am 6 foot tall and had to damn near slide on to the floor to reach the pedals. The seats were not adjustable, those cars came in on a flat bed, no one to drive them.
