Is this Puma lathe decent?

Are these rigid machines? Anyone know if this one is direct drive or does it have multiple gear ranges? Will it handle moderate DOC in steel at it's rated swing/14" stock?

What is the 16 Fanuc control related to? Is it similar to the 16i/18i? or is it more like the older controls?

I need to replace an old lathe ASAP and this lathe is conveniently located. Thanks for any input.

Pumas typically have pretty heavy iron and decent rigidity. They are definitely a step down in overall quality from premium builders though. Daewoo was weak in control integration (poor ladder logic) so many instances of odd alarms or behaviors when things weren’t working properly.

The 16T is a great control and an earlier/simpler forerunner to the i versions. Way more control than the machine needs or deserves.

Ellison sold them when I worked there. Most had start up issues to work out for a while. Once those were figured out they ran pretty well.

That said, if it is not beat to crap you can make good parts with a Puma.

I had a Star SR-20 Fanuc 16TT lathe that became a money pit from control issues, it did seem the final straw was a common alarm. It was caused by a failed chip only the MTB could program and Fanuc did not have any new daughter cards available. No way was I pay $3k to have a couple chips burned on an old card. Correct me if my nomenclature is wrong.

I hope that's not the case, but it would be a better scenario than a 1985 Okuma-Howa with a dead proprietary PLC. If I could have it running in 2 weeks for $3000 I would have no problem paying that. It's a very good machine, but I have no time to dick with it right now. I will move it out of the way and deal with it later.

The dead Okuma-Howa Act3 that I have is a size that is never quite right for the mix of lathe work I do. I'm either turning a 125# slab of 14" 1045 into a 60 lb part as fast as I can or bar pulling parts from 2.5" 6061 tubing. The through hole was too small for my small stuff and the work envelope and 10" chuck are wrong for 14" parts. Plus it doesn't have a chip conveyor.

I have a big monster leadwell with a 16" chuck, but it has turret problems and is an open ended project. I also don't really have the power to feed it. I don't think I can really run it effectively with my current power. This lathe is perfect for my 14" parts when I can get it sorted and get real 3 phase in here.

The Puma seems right about right to bridge the gap between my shitbox Hardinge 42 for little barfed stuff and the monster Leadwell. I can bar pull 2.5" parts no problem and if it's solid enough to effectively cut 14" steel parts it can get a half dozen products back in stock again. Plus, the big thing is just getting a solid working CNC lathe on my floor so I can make a dozen toolsteel parts for press tools.

Anyone know if Daewoo is supported OK by Doosan?

Daewoo was supported well by Doosan but they were just acquired and rebranded as DN Solutions. They claim they will continue supporting older models. I’ve been really happy with my old box way lynx. Daewoo/Doosan has always had a good reputation as a mid tier builder I’ve never heard any complaints about them as long as you have reasonable expectations.

If it isn't abused then it would be a good machine. Does it have programming?
I do think it's overpriced by a couple of grand though.

Can you explain the "does it have programming" part?

I've bought several machines from the dealer selling this one and when his ad says "open to offers" it means there's lots of room to go down.

Just a few months ago I sold mid 80's Mori SL2H for $7500 to an outfit in a jamb. Now I wish I hadn't!

I know where there's a cherry Mori Sl25 for sale. I'm going to call them Monday too.

What's your budget? Any certain specs that are a must? A quick eBay search found these. Not too far away from you.

I'd like to be under $10k including DIY or pro rigging, but I'd spend more if I found something with a sub/Y axis, etc.

Fanuc, because I can fix it and don't have the ability to learn a new control with all the things I'm forcing myself to learn at the moment. lol

I'd consider an older machine, as old as a 10T, if it was minty. Otherwise I'd prefer a 16i/18i/21i series control because I have two already and they have advanced spindle drive parameters so I can turn down the spindle accel to work on my power.

And gears. I like gears. Maybe newer machines don't need them, I know my big Leadwell doesn't have any gears, but it has an 80HP motor to make up for that. In my mind, a late 90's/early 2000's era machine with 2-3 gear ranges and 15-20HP would be good. The old Mazak I started with had a 0-500 low range and that was awesome for hogging at larger diameters. Couldn't really stall it.

I'm near Portland, OR so those are far from me. I could go as far north as Canada border, South to Sacramento and East to Boise.

The Blue and white Mori SL25 I'm going to call on tomorrow is minty and nearby. They want $22k and I doubt they'll take under $15k for it. I'm basically going to offer them a quick and easy $7500 and if not, no sweat.

This size lathe is not a big profit center for me, but I don't have anything between an 1-5/8 collet nose Hardinge and a Leadwell with a 5" through hole. Like having nothing between a 20 lb sledge and a tack hammer.

The mori sl25 was sold for $20k. That says something about Mori if a 30 year old Mori can still fetch that coin.

My ultra lowball offer for the Puma was accepted.

I don't have a po for the job I need the Puma for yet. If I get the po and the Puma has a geared low range I will go pick it up.

Dude! Don't run the Leadwell when you're running everything else LoL!

Going to check out Puma on Friday. If it checks out I will move it in via rollback towtruck.

Does anyone know where to look for the control batteries on a Fanuc 16? The lathe has been unpowered for 4 months so I want to check the battery voltage.

I think it is on the main CPU under the yellow cover, but it has been a while.

I believe the main CPU is the yellow box with the most cables plugged in was on the extreme right in the back on the money pit I scrapped.
