Is this Puma lathe decent?

Basic, but have you checked that the estop circuit isn't open somewhere? My old 0T-C starts up to that screen if it's switched on with the estop pressed, and stays like that until you release the estop and press the control on button.

Turned breaker off, turned breaker on
Hello Garwood,
Is the Main Breaker a rotary type, or a toggle type switch. If the rotary type, that normally doubles as safety catch for the door, preventing it from opening while there is power to the machine, it also has the function of resetting that breaker as well. The Reset function is typically marked on the switch, indicating the direction the switch has to be turned, which will be the same direction as off, but further. What you see on your screen is typical of that breaker being in the tripped condition; however, its not common for that breaker to trip with the control on and nothing much happening.

Regards,

Bill

Is the turret still taken apart? Maybe there is a proximity switch inside the turret looking for a signal.
I pulled the face off the turret, but all else is intact. I don't think anything is amiss in there.

I jumped the machine ready and spindle drive ready ice cube relay coils to ground to turn them on and the drives didn't come up nor would the control come up.

What all is required for the drives to come up? The indicator LEDs on the control still suggest the control is waiting for the drives to turn on.

All the axis overtravel and ballscrew overtorque limits test fine. I'm not sure if there's anything else in the estop circuit. Deawoo wiring book is kinda meh.

I was thinking the torque overloads but it sounds like you verified that. Hydraulic pump working?

Is normal behavior on yours you turn it on, then take out of e stop, then hit "machine ready" button to turn on drives and hydraulic system?

Do you have a bar feeder or chip conveyor that interfaces with the control? I've bumped the E-stop on my bar feed without realizing it and spent an hour trying to clear the alarm.

Never had barfeed, but does have conveyor.

Been busy with other stuff. I'll check more things in a couple days.

Huge shout out to Kevin for coming down to troubleshoot this old thing with me last weekend. Definitely a very weird issue with this machine. very intermittently we got a 920 alarm (like one in 20+ power cycles) on the screen. The Puma uses Fanuc input and output modules. Kevin noticed the I/O module's Data Link LED would come on, then turn off right after turning on the control.

We replaced the console I/O board and jumpered a few relays to no real change.

That 920 alarm suggested replacing the axis control daughter board. When we pulled the board to get the numbers and google it and I found one on Ebay and guess what- Ebay said I had already purchased this item. Turned out I already replaced that board for very different symptoms back when I got the lathe. I also ordered spares because they're a cheap board. We put one in and the control came right up.

As part of troubleshooting we wiped the control memory. We reloaded parameters. Couldn't get PMC parameters to upload with RS232 so keyed all those in and there were some differences between the original paper copies and what I had punched out. Had some homing issues- Kevin found the decel switches were both stuck. Seemed like it was all working good.

Then went to start the spindle S200 M3 and it kinda growls and goes backward about 30 degrees and stops. No alarms.

I checked and doublechecked NC and PMC parameters and I'm fairly confident what's in there is all good. I changed a couple keep relays related to the spindle and no change.

And that's where we are.

Just wanted to update this troubleshooting adventure with some resolution and make sure Kevin knows how much I appreciate his help!!! I've got a major parts order to get out in a couple weeks so have to switch gears to get that together. Then I'll get back on this Puma, see what's up with the spindle. I'm going to order a manual for the spindle drive and get a helper to start the spindle while I watch. See is the drive is doing anything back there.

A couple things in the back of my mind- This lathe has always had an odd herky-jerky start from a stopped spindle. I initially thought maybe IGBT's are on the outs in the drive, but I've run it a fair bit over a couple years now and it just stayed the same. The spindle encoder is belt driven. The belt looks like total shit and ready to come apart- Maybe it did?

Could failed spindle encoder belt or bad encoder cause the spindle to not start like this? I'd have thought the spindle would start fine using the spindle motor internal encoder and the spindle encoder would just throw an alarm or stop it from threading. Just trying to rule out pulling the headstock sheetmetal to get to the encoder if it makes no sense.
